Training of the Next Generation of Health Professionals that Advocate for Latino Health

Despite passage of the Affordable Care Act, Latino communities continue to be disproportionately affected by chronic diseases such as diabetes and obesity, and are the population most likely to lack healthcare coverage. To address these needs, the Latino community requires physician leaders with expertise in both Latino health care and policy development. Prior to the development of the LMSA Policy Summit, no venue existed that specifically focused on the training of medical students in Latino health policy.  Yet students and educators consistently show interest in increasing their exposure to health policy training. Over 90% of participants at the 2017 LMSA National Conference identify training in health policy as an important addition to medical school and residency curriculum. The 2018 LMSA Policy Summit represents the culmination of a year-long policy training process that includes student-driven research, policy development, academic publications and networking within the Latino community. In its fifth annual policy conference, LMSA will continue a tradition of peer support, networking, academic excellence and policy development that will change the face of medicine well into the future.

Below are the general and skill specific learning objectives for the 150-200 medical students anticipated in attendance

Three primary objectives of our policy summit are:

  1. Health Policy training

  2. Networking opportunities

  3. Leadership development

Policy training will inform attendees about policy processes and relevant community issues, with opportunities for policy writing in break out sessions.Networking between students facilitates multidisciplinary collaborations. The conference will facilitate discourse with medical students, politicians and other professionals active in Latino health policy to foster discussion and possible mentorship relations. Lastly, leadership development will be incorporated into each session to emphasize the importance of health professional advocates for the Latino community.

Skills Based Objectives: After completing conference activities, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the basic steps of the health policy making process, including how to recognize, formulate, implement, and evaluate a health policy’s outcome.

  2. Gain communication skills and first hand experience in advocating for Latino Health through legislation and lobbying.
