The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA), LMSA Northeast, and our host the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine are proud to announce LMSA’s 12th Annual National Conference in conjunction with the 44th Annual Northeast Regional Conference. This conference will take place on April 7-9, 2017 in Hempstead, NY. We invite advisors from across the country to participate in the 1st ever Physician Advisor Training in order to become effective Advisors to LMSA Chapters and partner institutions.

Advisor Orientation and Training Track(CME provided) at the 12th Annual LMSA National Conference hosted at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, April 7-9, 2017 in Hempstead, NY. The advisor training and orientation is scheduled for Friday, April 7 from 8am – 12pm and then 4pm – 7pm (tentative schedule below)

Dear LMSA Advisor:


Happy New Year! Thank you for serving as an advisor to our Latino Medical Student Association Chapter at your institution and/or to our LMSA Regional Board. Your guidance helps to ensure that our organization flourishes on the chapter, regional, and national level and that our members develop personally and professionally, to serve as the next generation of Latino leaders.

The advisor training and orientation is scheduled for Friday, April 7 from 8am – 12pm and then 4pm – 7pm (tentative schedule attached.


As you know, the vision of LMSA is to unify all medical students and allies into one organization to actively promote the recruitment, retention, and promotion of Latino students in medicine. As we expand our membership among college, post-bacc, and medical students across the country and introduce new innovations for trainee development, we want to ensure that our advisors are knowledgeable and well prepared regarding LMSA history, policies, and practices to effectively guide our members. We have recently selected Dr. J. P. Sanchez MD, MPH to serve as Co-Executive Director of LMSA; he will work closely with Dr. Elizabeth Homan-Sandoval and our National Leadership in developing our advisor base.



Registration for the track will open January 23, 2017. Registration for the advisor orientation and training is $200.00 which includes breakfast, lunch, and materials (CME separate fee of $50.00 to be paid later). Dr. Sanchez is seeking abstract submissions for the workshop on Innovations in supporting Latino/Hispanic students along the medical school pipeline.  Abstract submissions are due by February 25, 2017 (5pm PST) and selections will be announced March 1, 2017. Additionally, we have recently launched the LMSA National Leadership Survey to help us learn about your past and current LMSA-related roles and leadership successes and challenges. Such information will help inform and guide future professional development trainings for medical students and advisors. Call for Proposals

LMSA National Advisor Orientation and Training Track


As we start 2017, it is time to reflect on the coming challenges and innovations in promoting Latino/Hispanic representation in the medical pipeline.


Proposals are intended to provide a forum for the extended exchange of ideas among advisors on topics of common interest regarding innovations and challenges to the personal and professional development of LMSA members along the pipeline. The Program Committee is most interested in workshops detailing: 1) innovative educational and service activities that promote the personal and professional development of LMSA members, 2) best practices in advising LMSA members, 3) institutional climate practices supporting the inclusion of Latino trainees, and 4) LMSA based educational initiatives to train health care providers to provide better care to Latino patients. However, other Latino/Hispanic proposals will be considered.


Selected proposals will be grouped by topic during one of the two concurrent blocks (each block will offer two sessions). If accepted, each speaker(s) on a panel will have 20 minutes for their presentation, for a total of 2 presentations; 15 minutes will be reserved for discussion at the end of each panel.

Review Process



The committee will place higher preference on work that is already completed at the time of submission and work that has been led by LMSA members with guidance and advising by advisors. A copy of the final presentations will be due 2 weeks prior to the conference. The review process will be competitive. Submissions must follow the template in order to be considered for peer review. Submissions will be selected for presentation following peer review. Sessions presenting a diverse range of topics and presenters will be selected from submissions with the highest ratings. Use the following criteria as a guideline when preparing your submission:


Topic Timeliness/Interest Potential

  Clarity of Write-Up: Content

•  Creativity and Originality: Work shows creativity and originality

  Audience: Level of participant involvement is appropriate for a small group discussion

•  Adaptability: Ideas have the potential to be adapted to other institutions

If selected, you must register for the conference to present your oral presentation. We regret that we cannot waive the registration fee or pay travel expenses for presenters.


In order for your submission to be complete, you must submit the proposal and curriculum vitae for each presenter(s).
