The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) is proud to announce the Eighth Annual LMSA Southeast Regional Conference hosted by the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond, VA. The conference will take place on Friday, January 29 and Saturday, January 30, 2016 at the McGlothlin Medical Education Center with a community service project on Sunday, January 31. 2016.
The theme of this year’s conference is Sigue Pa’lante, which translates to “Keep Moving Forward.” This conference will focus on the celebration of Hispanic/Latino culture and values and how these factors play a role in healthcare, both as physicians and patients. Currently, Hispanic and Latino Americans amount to 17.1% of the population, making up the largest ethnic minority in the United States. Our intention is to empower others to keep fighting and pushing forward, while simultaneously lending a hand and serving those that may be struggling. Additionally, we hope to bring together healthcare professionals who share our interest in celebrating the Hispanic/Latino culture and addressing the various difficulties and successes of this avidly growing community.
Our conference will include premedical and medical student-centered programming, which will focus on physician and healthcare-related topics. Furthermore, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine will be hosting a dinner gala on the evening of Saturday, January 30.
Through the generosity of our financial sponsors and the hard work of our board members, we are able to bring together health professionals, researchers, and students to explore the many issues facing the Latino community and others facing disparities. Health professionals will be able to share valuable skills and information with present and future community leaders, helping to stimulate positive change in our healthcare system. With the success of our last joint National/Southeast Regional Conference, we expect in excess of 175 participants this year. The financial support we receive from our sponsors has made our vision a reality. For this reason, we are petitioning for your generous support.
